My Role as Coach

A Coach is a person who assists and challenges players to achieve their full potential.

The Athenry Camogie Development Committees’ Development Plan identified the need to prioritise and support the development of players and coaches as key to the long-term success and health of the club.  The coach plays a central role in the development of the player. The challenge for the coach is to create the right conditions for learning to happen and to empower the player to develop herself to reach their potential.  Coaches should be committed to creating fun, safe playing environments for all our players, regardless of age or ability level.

Coaching Knowledge

Camogie Player Pathway
The Camogie Player Pathway highlights the skills and characteristics that Camogie players can expect at each stage of their development. This is signposted from a child’s early years right through to retirement. It then also suggests ways for players to make the transition into other non-playing but equally important roles at club level. Maximising participation and lifelong involvement in Camogie are fundamental aspects of our sport.

The underpinning philosophy of the Player Development Model is to support players to reach their full potential through coaching, training, and developing their athletic and personal capacities as they grow though sport.

Camogie is a highly skilful and speedy sport. Age appropriate and developmentally appropriate learning of Camogie is essential to enhance all players’ experience and enjoyment of playing it.

Skill Evolution
This link provides a visual representation of the progression of the technical skills of Camogie in isolation. Skill Evolution serves as a checkpoint for coaches, parents and players in attempting to maximise effectiveness within skill practises, relevant to the player’s phase of development upon the Gaelic Games Player Pathway.
